San Clemente Cookie Dough Co. Review

If I have discovered anything in this world as a foodie with food restrictions, it’s that gluten-free, vegan cookie dough is the stuff dreams are made of. Whether you are craving oven-hot cookies or an indulgent snack of raw (but safe) cookie dough, there’s really no losing when it comes to gluten-free, vegan dough.

I’ve heard buzz surrounding San Clemente Cookie Dough Co.’s vegan, gluten-free cookie dough, as they’ve worked for years on a perfect recipe for delicious, but healthy(ish) raw cookie dough. Now ready to launch, they are currently running a Kickstarter campaign to get the project off the ground.

When Mike, the founder put out an all-call for taste testers to promote the dough’s launch, I happily volunteered for the responsibility to put the dough to test. I’ve seen many a gluten and dairy-free dough in my life, and wondered how this new product would stack up.

What’s awesome about San Clemente is that there cookies are not only safe for those avoiding gluten and dairy, but their cookies are egg-free, soy-free and organic too.

The dough is certified gluten-free, and is made with oat flour as the only “flour.” I liked how short and readable the ingredient list was, and that the cookies were made with real ingredients. Stable at room temperature, the dough only needs to be refrigerated when opened, which means this cookie dough is a perfect travel snack wherever your adventure takes you.

The dough is sticky and holds its form, and can be portioned however you wish. Big cookies or small- it’s all your call. While preparing cookies for the oven, I found it irresistible to try the raw dough, which had all the indulgence of eating raw dough without the looming threat of stray salmonella from raw eggs. The raw dough is not grainy and is dense and sweet, but is on the oily side, which meant that I only ate a few bites of raw dough.

Because my cookies were small, they baked quickly in approximately 12 minutes. They emerged golden brown, and smelled heavenly. The dough is sweet and vanilla-y, as the chocolate chip cookie base should be. I cooked them a little over the perfect “done” point, and they were crunchy, but I didn’t mind at all. The chocolate chips are small and plentiful, which means that every bite has a great ratio of dough to chocolate chip.

I give San Clemente two thumbs up because they not only have a product that works both raw and baked, but they made sure to keep those with dietary restrictions in mind so that everyone can enjoy the simplicity of a chocolate chip cookie. Whether your are avoiding soy, gluten, dairy, eggs, or animal products altogether, these cookies are the answer to your craving for fresh-baked cookies or eating raw dough.

Stay tuned to the Kickstarter and San Clemente Cookie Dough Co.’s Instagram account for news about their launch. I know I’ll be eagerly awaiting the announcement of new dough varieties.
