In the past few weeks I’ve let pending reviews pile up, because I have been in the midst of graduating college and moving to DC in addition to the usual stressors of the holiday season. Now that the pace of life has slowed a bit, I am excited to share a new foodie find I discovered in my last week as a Maryland resident: Grabbagreen.
While Grabbagreen can be categorized as a fast food restaurant for their quick-serve model of service, don’t mistake this restaurant with others in the category who cut corners and value speed over quality ingredients.
Grabbagreen builds their menu using fresh, farm-to-table, locally sourced ingredients to craft juices, salads, and meals that nourish and satisfy. This is a place you don’t have to feel guilty stopping at if you need to eat on the fly!
I was tipped off about Grabbagreen by Andrea of Baltimore Gluten Free. When she posted about the restaurant being 99.9% GF, I jumped on Baltimore’s light rail to Hunt Valley. Why 99.9% gluten-free you ask? Well, the only gluten-containing item Grabbagreen sells is flour tortillas for wraps. Everything else is gluten-free. Staff members are happy to change gloves when requested to make sure your food is safely prepared.
In terms of dairy-free, vegan and vegetarian items are noted on the menu, and staff are happy to answer any questions about ingredients for this and other dietary restrictions.
I decided to order the French Quarter bowl, which is a brown rice bowl topped with avocado, cayenne, parsley, red onion, red pepper, shrimp, spinach, and creamy avocado sauce. Each of the components were remarkably fresh and flavorful, but I wish there was a little more of the dressing to tie the components together. The bowl definitely seemed like a salad over rice rather than a coherent bowl. Nevertheless, the bowl totally hit the spot. It’s refreshing to get sit-down restaurant-quality fare in an affordable and accessible way.
As a side, I picked out a bag of Terra blue potato chips, which appealed both for their novelty and ability to quench my craving for something salty. I am not a huge potato chip fan but I loved these. Light, crunchy, and salty, they were absolutely perfect and a great complement to the deal.
As a drink, I selected Wild Kombucha’s apple spice brew, which is one of many kombucha options available. While the drink had awesome seasonally-appropriate flavor profile, it might not have been the best choice for my meal, as the sweetness of the apple juice flavored drink clashed with the both the salad and chips. It’s not a knock against it, but next time I’d take a bottle to go to enjoy later!
I was impressed by my Grabbagreen meal, and am so thankful that they have set up shop to bring more gluten and dairy-free eats to this neck of the woods. Anytime I can eat out with no hesitation earns a gold checkmark in my book. I hope this location is the first of many to come in the Baltimore area because we could definitely use more options for safe and health fast food.
While I visited during the dinner hour, Grabbagreen is also a good option for breakfast, juices, and smoothies. Check out their expansive menu for all of their options!
