When it comes to fast casual dining, I am all about design-your-own bowl concepts (such as Sweetgreen or ShopHouse), which enable me to pick and choose a custom meal that makes getting all my veggies both easy and delicious.
For my final meal eating out in Orlando, I decided to check out Hummus House, a local chain with locations near UCF and Winter Park. Here, hummus clearly takes center stage, in customized salads, pita sandwiches, or rice bowls.
Although I’m not the biggest of hummus fans, my curiosity was peaked so I managed to squeeze it into my packed itinerary during my short visit to Orlando.
The menu has annotations indicating gluten-free and dairy-free items, but know that some “GF” items are not celiac safe due to cross contamination from the fryer. My advice? Skip the falafel and fried cauliflower (no matter how much it pains me to skip falafel).
When I stepped up to order, I requested that the staff member who was making my bowl change their gloves. Hummus House’s set up is very similar to Chipotle, and that’s what I do whenever I order there. That same staff member followed my bowl down the line, to ensure it was safe.
It’s delicious fun to go down the line and select from the vibrant produce and delicious-sounding toppings such as hummuses, dressings, and proteins. All hummuses are made in house and all but the guacamole and salsa hummus are gluten-free and vegan. All hummuses are vegan.
I designed my salad bowl with chicken, an assortment of veggies (cucumber, red onion, banana pepper, tomatoes), garlic hummus, and the Greek vinaigrette dressing. I loved how fresh the produce was and the smooth, garlicky hummus (definitely not one to order if meeting people after!). The vinaigrette was flavorful without being overpowering, tying all the ingredients together. The chicken was good, but not as flavorful as I’d hoped.
Overall, Hummus House is definitely a solid lunch choice for quick salads or bowls that pack a nutritious punch. Most of the menu is gluten-free and vegan, so it’s easy to navigate around dietary restrictions. I would recommend visiting at an off peak hour to ensure that the staff can dedicate their attentions to your dietary restrictions, because it did get pretty busy while I was eating my salad (that’s a tip for any restaurant though).
